About this calendar

Events listed here must be on dirt trails or otherwise of particular interest to VHTRC members. This is not a place to list road races. (If you are looking for local road races, go to Washington Running Report or Race Packet. For national ultras try Ultrarunning Magazine. For national trail runs, try Trail Runner Magazine.)

We do not list all running events here. But VHTRC members may suggest events. To do so, e-mail Quatro Hubbard who has overall responsibility for this calendar.

50 mile course alternates between roads and trails, with lots of hills. There is also a mountain bike race, a 50km run and a three-person relay option in the 50 mile run.

A challenging 100 miler that is held in the same general location as TWOT, and is the East Coast’s Hardrock qualifying race. Grindstone is part of the Beast Series. Note 6 p.m. Friday starting time.

Quantico, VA

A runnable 50 km run comprised of two loops on the easy rolling trails of Prince William Forest Park, directed by the VHTRC’s Sarah Curtis. A final decision on the 2020 event will be made later this summer.

A fall series of 10 mile races. Each race also has a 5 mile option. This race is held on the trails of Lake Fairfax Park in suburban Virginia.

Hyner, PA

The 65 mile course is held in Hyner Run State Park and the Sproul and Tiadaghton State Forests in north central Pennsylvania. 13,400 feet of elevation gain and a 19 hour cut-off for this challenging race.

Race management says of the run, “This Ultra was created to give newcomers to the world of ultra running a relatively easy race to get started.” The race where the term “benign trail” was first coined.

Entry opens: Feb 2, 2020

“A triptych of runs on the Eastern Continential Divide” - day one is 50 km, day 2 is 50 miles, and day 3 is a half marathon. This classic and highly challenging event is in West Virginia’s beautiful Monongahela National Forest, with the option to sign up for one race, two races or all three.

Albion, IN

A run on the Wild Oak Recreational Trail. Tough and very low key. This is the “Hot TWOT” since it is held during what should be warmer fall weather, but it has often been anything but hot at this time of year on these trails, so be prepared! For those aiming to run the full 100, plan on a Friday AM start; others generally start on Saturday AM.

100.8 mile loop that traverses through the heart of the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area in Kentucky and Tennessee. Start/finish is in an abandoned coal mining town.

Norton, VA

Held in the Cumberland Mountains in SW Virginia. The 100 miler has a 40 hour cutoff. There are accompanying 100 km, 50 km and 25 km races held concurrently.

You run in four states in one day, traditionally held on the Saturday the weekend before the Marine Corps Marathon. It’s a long run over challenging trail - you will have to move with dispatch to finish in daylight. Entry is limited to VHTRC members; and will open a few weeks prior to the run.

Put on by the Charlottesville Area Trail Runners (CATs) and held on single-track mountain bike trails on the campus of the Miller School, just west of Charlottesville in Albemarle County. The CATHalf was augmented with the Pounding Creek Marathon in 2018, and for 2019 a Trail 10k was added.

Virginia’s premier fall ultrarunning event is still going strong. The event that gave us the “Horton Mile” is now hosted by Clark Zealand. A tough and notoriously “long” course in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. MMTR is part of the Lynchburg Ultra Series and the Beast Series.

An out-and-back starting at the Manor Parking Area in Cunningham State Park (the turnaround for the Catoctin 50 km) featuring Bob’s Hill (800 feet ascent in 1.5 miles). The purpose of this race is to have an event with a generous aid station cut off and time limit so entrants of all abilities can experience our festive finish line.

Often referred to as “Shenandoah’s National Park’s greatest hits,” this 25-mile loop’s highlights include White Oak Canyon, Hawksbill, Stony Man, all connected by beautiful ridge running on the Appalachian Trail.

A fun run on primarily the Willis River Trail in Bear Creek State Park and Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia.

Natural Bridge, VA

David Horton’s “special” 100k starts one minute after midnight. It is tough, cold, and icy - usually. You will love it! This race has become semi-invitational, with registration generally starting after the Grindstone 100 in early October. The final test in the Beast Series.

Farmville, VA

Out-and-back on the High Bridge Trail, one of Virginia’s newest rails-to-trails projects. The course features a 2400 foot long bridge, Civil War era battlefields, and a chance to run through downtown Farmville. There is also a 50 km option.

Day #1 of the MLK weekend of mountain training runs, this year hosted by Larry Huffman. This is a roughly 50 km section of the MMT 100 course along the western ridge of the Massanuttens, starting at the Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp and ending at Signal Knob.

Put on by the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team, this notoriously difficult, rooty, five-loop course takes place in the mountains just outside Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawai‘i.

The traditional Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend kick-off to Massanutten 100 training, with two long training runs on portions of the MMT course. A 50 mile trail run that parallels the Bull Run and the Occoquan River in northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. The course traverses forested, rolling terrain during the height of Virginia’s spring beauty. The run’s unique character includes a Civil War theme that honors the battles that occurred here over 150 years ago. The 13 hour time limit makes Bull Run Run an excellent first 50 miler.

A challenging, rocky 100 miler on the trails of the Massanutten Mountains in the George Washington National Forest in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The course includes short but rugged mountain climbs with more than 18,000 feet of total ascent. There is a 35 hour cutoff.

Alisa Springman and Sheila Vibert co-host this holiday weekend race in south-central Pennsylvania’s Cowans Gap State Park. Very challenging course in a beautiful area, with a lakeside barbeque at the finish. The 2021 event entry will be through the VHTRC online system and will open in the spring.

A low-key run exploring the other trails around Wild Oak in the Jefferson National Forest. A creation of the legend, Dennis Herr. The 2019 race was canceled due to construction that closed a road section used for support and as a part of the course, and the 2020 race was canceled due to COVID-19.

Washington Crossing, NJ

A weekend full of races in Historic Washington Crossing Park (of Revolutionary War fame) in New Jersey, alongside the Delaware River and the Pennsylvania border. Saturday is the 50k race, and Sunday has a series of shorter races, including “Triple Dog” (combination of the Saturday 50k, with Sunday’s 5k and 15k races) and “Double Dog” (5k and 15k races combined) options.

Fairly flat and fast marathon and 10 mile races in Medoc Mountain State Park near Raleigh. Registration is on May 15th, and the race historically has filled quickly.

This is a great race to be introduced to trail running or to put up some serious miles. The loop course is 2.85 miles along the Cabin and Big Woods Trail in Powhatan State Park, featuring picturesque running through open fields as well as forest.

Put on by the G.A.C. and sponsored by a brewery. What is there not to like about that? After a long and storied run, the 50 miler and its associated marathon are no more. 50k distance only starting in 2019.

Start off the new year right with the Delaware Trail Dawgs at their annual fat ass 50k, held in Fair Hill Park. There is also a 25 km option.

Eight hour run on what are generally flat, runnable horse trails in Lake Anna State Park, located north of Richmond and west of Fredericksburg. Runners have a choice of an 8-mile loop or a 4.7-mile loop to run each time out. 10 anniversary running in 2018; this is a good introductory event for first-time trail runners.

Fairly flat and fast, this is a good intro race for new trail and ultra runners. The first race in the Lynchburg Ultra Series, and the deceptively tame start to the infamous six race “Beast Series.” Under new leadership in 2021 as race founder David Horton passes that baton; the race will include a 25K option.
