Report
It was a nice weekend for a run around the Massanuttens. Given the race’s late date this year, seasonably cool temperatures were welcome as runners left Caroline Furnace Saturday morning. Things heated up in the afternoon but, just as it was getting a little hot for comfort, afternoon showers and storms cooled things off for a glorious evening and night for running. A nice breeze on Sunday tempered the warm sunshine.
Newcomer Hunter Shuler from nearby Rockingham County in western Virginia surprised everyone with an impressive wire-to-wire win in just over 18 hours. A young veteran, Rachel Corrigan, led the women’s field and, in the process, snagged a coveted silver buckle (given to all runners who finish under 24 hours). Rachel was running on the trails that make up the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 mile course for the very first time.
