Blue Train at Bighorn
The Bighorn races are held in the beautiful, rugged Bighorn Mountains near Sheridan. They are considered “old school” in the ultra community with minimal sponsors, a tough course, and excellent volunteer support. The races are the pride of the Dayton community. The 100 is an out and back along the Tongue and Little Bighorn River canyons, and it starts at 11:00 am on Friday, in order to bring runners of all distances together at the finish line on Saturday afternoon. In blazing sun and temps in the high 80s during the day and 40s at night, Keith Knipling was the top VHTRC finisher of the 100 in 28:51. In the 50 miler on Saturday, Sophie Speidel was the first VHTRC member to finish in 11:59, and Zeke Zucker won the 70+ age group in 13:46. In the 50k, Tom Corris was second in the 60-69 age group while Ed Demoney won the 70+ age group. Many others finished the various distances and hung around the post-race finish line party to celebrate the Summer Solstice and share their Bighorn stories.
