53 starters, 46 finishers

First to the finish of the Boyer’s Furnace 40 miler (and new event record holder) Paul Jacobs, with RD Carol Cohen. 📸 Quatro Hubbard

What an amazing day for an all-day party! We enjoyed starting line temps in the mid-40s, highs in the mid-50s, a bit of rain, and little more fog before the sunshine came out it in all its glory. BOTH the men’s and women’s course records were set, and there were loads of other blazing-fast times. We had at least a couple people (including Austin Williams and David McLaughlin) running their first ultra ever…woohoo! Others, including Jessie Wingo (see below), were attending their first VHTRC event ever.

Our trail family did not disappoint, treating them to a gourmet rolling feast and a finish line bonfire with hot chili, and freshly baked pizza and cookies. Chocolate-covered bacon? Check. Pierogies? Check. Grilled cheese sandwiches with 6 types of cheese inside? Check check check.

True story 1: Paul Jacobs last broke the course record in 2019. He was so fast that he beat an aid station. Or two. So, I had the volunteers show up an hour earlier the next year. But Paul didn’t show, and two or three years later I went back to having the aid stations set up to be ready for the first mortal to come through. Well, Paul came back this year and broke his own record. BY FOURTEEN MINUTES. He finished in 6:02, racing to the finish line so fast that a volunteer thought there was no way he could be participating in this run.

Paul finished 53 minutes ahead of Mordy Osina, who drove out from Ohio to run the event in a speedy 6:55. Barret Stanton, who was in recovery mode after his 2nd place finish at Hellgate just 2 weeks ago and very much chilling out at the aid stations, rounded out the men’s podium in 7:26.

True story 2: Jesse Wingo showed up late for her first VHTRC event, having to park at the bottom of the hill after the lot filled up. After getting a bit of intel on the course, Q said, “you look fast. You should probably take off”. Take off she did. Despite starting a few minutes late, she broke the women’s course record by 3 minutes and finished with a gun time of 7:53. Sheila Martin dropped the hammer and dropped the boys in the last 9 miles, finishing second in 8:17. Lindsay Weaver, running with a friend the entire way, cruised into third place in 8:40.

Jeff Pence took advantage of his “home field advantage” as a resident of the Fort Valley area; he started 40 minutes early. His splits and finishing time have been adjusted accordingly. Jeff did finish at the same time as Larry Tumblin (just after 7:30 PM)
