New this year - the MGM Santa Bear sticker! Ho ho ho!

The 29th running of the club’s first event, the MGM 50K, was held on Saturday, December 11, 2021. It was so good to be back together with the VHTRC family, spending the day running with friends, in the woods, and sharing time with each other! 99 runners started in the unseasonably warm temperatures and gusty winds, and 44 runners finished the full 50K, with others enjoying various distances while playing on the leaf-covered trail. The forecasted showers were perfectly timed, as the pre-dawn rain ended before the runners arrived, and the first drops of the evening rain fell as the last of the volunteers left just after dusk.

Luke Evans was the overall winner, in 5:17, with Chris Pabian coming in second in 5:23. Stephanie Hill was the first woman, finishing in 5:37, with Heather Phelps coming in second woman in 6:08. Congratulations to all runners who spent the day enjoying temperatures in the 60’s and frolicking on our home trails!

Eric Levy-Myers kept runners happy as they entered and exited the Do Loop with yummy food, ice and special treats. Tracey Thibodeau, Steven Gould, Jennifer Colman and Tammy Cason kept runners hydrated at the Marina Aid Station. The after-party at the Hemlock shelter had pizza, brownies, cookies, soda and a place to hang out for everyone until the last runners finished. I can’t think of a better way to welcome in the holidays!

Some runners self-reported much more precise times and distances at the Hemlock pavilion finish line. The 10 mile runners generally covered the course to the Bull Run Marina aid station and back. A “peloton time” and distance were assigned to some runners who did short runs on the course in the morning. The 25 mile runners covered the course to the aid station at the entrance to the Do Loop section of the course, and then back to Hemlock. The runners with 50k+ distances appeared to run into course navigation issues in the infamous Do Loop section.
