2026 Report

The 2026 running of Catherine’s Furnace 50K felt like a gift from the weather gods. After the race was postponed one week because of heavy smoke on July 18th, runners and volunteers returned to the Massanutten trails to find something almost unheard of for late July in Virginia: cool, crisp temperatures, and an occasional breeze that made the climbs feel almost forgiving. For a course known for heat, humidity, and attrition, this year’s conditions set the stage for fast times, gritty performances, and a whole lot of personal redemption.

Peter Schlachte wasted no time establishing control of the race, hammering through the rugged loop in 4:39, just four minutes shy of the course record. His efficiency on the climbs and fearless descending earned him the men’s win.

Not far behind, Paul Jacobs delivered a strong and steady performance, finishing in 4:47 for second place. Known for his aggressive pacing, Jacobs ran a more measured effort this year as he prepares for a big September race.

The men’s podium rounded out with Trevor Baine, who shocked everyone (not really, this seems to be his thing) by running 5:10 — despite joking that he had “only run 14 miles this year.” His time was fast enough to place him ahead of the women’s winner and firmly among the day’s strongest efforts.

The women’s field was headlined by Maggie Szabo, who stormed the course in 5:21 to claim the win. After going off course last year (when it was marked, this year it was not), she returned with purpose and executed a clean, confident race.

Behind her, Whitney Richman ran a gritty 5:59, wheezing her way to second place and proving once again that she thrives on tough days.

Rounding out the women’s podium, Heather Dougherty finished in 6:23, adding yet another podium to her collection. Consistency is her trademark, and she delivered it again.

The one week postponement could have dampened enthusiasm, but instead it seemed to strengthen it. Runners arrived grateful for clear skies, cooler air, and the chance to gather after a smoky interruption. Aid stations were lively, volunteers were dialed in, and the trail community showed exactly why this event remains a beloved mid summer tradition.

This year’s event simply would not have happened without the dedication of our volunteers. When smoke forced the postponement, they rearranged their schedules, shifted commitments, and made sure every station was staffed for the new date.

From our Morgan Run and Pitt Springs water stops and course marshals, to our full aid stations at Furnace and Bird Knob, these volunteers kept runners fueled, safe, and smiling. And of course, the post run shindig crew brought the celebration to life at the finish.

Please take a moment to thank these wonderful people — they chose to forgo their own Saturday run in beautiful July weather so they could support you. Their generosity is the backbone of Catherine’s Furnace, and their spirit is what makes this race feel like family.
